Production Blog: Filming the table scenes!
Hey, welcome back!
Today we filmed the table scenes. These include when the husband is waiting at the table, the singing, the movie title scene, and the icing scenes.
Right before filming, my mom and I had to go out to buy candles for the cupcake and the icing. I hadn't realized we didn't have any candles until I was setting up for the scene. All turned out well though, we found these candles which would look really well on camera.
First, we filmed the cupcake icing, this was a simple task and didn't take too long as we already had all the cupcakes made, it was only a matter of icing them.
We began filming my dad, our actor for our husband, going to sit down at the table. Although we hadn't discussed this in the planning, we decided to film this in case we need a better segway from the other scenes.
For the happy birthday singing, we had two ways we wanted to do it. The first way creates the suspense commonly associated with thrillers, we wanted it to be only the wife singing. This would make it quieter and we could have her sing it slower than usual, this creates the suspense and tension we wanted. We could also have it so we have multiple people singing. We could use the embers in my family to sing this, sticking with the traditions of birthdays. All in all, we decided to only have the wife singing happy birthday because it fits the thriller genre more.
We filmed both the happy birthday song with ease. However, we had some trouble filming the title sequence. We wanted the man to be still visible after he blew out the candle, but having the room dark and our only source of light gone, he was no longer visible. First, we tried shining a flashlight behind the husband to reveal his silhouette, however, where we filmed there is a large pole, so it mainly showed his shoulders and the silhouette of the pole. We then moved the table slightly to reveal the window which was previously covered by the pole. We closed the curtains so that only a small amount of light was able to get through, and this slightly lit the actor up and gave us enough room to place the title of the movie.
For the next week, I will not be able to film anything as it is over Spring Break and I am going on a trip! However, after the break, we will film the final scenes!
See you next time!
