Production Blog: The (arguably) most important part, MUSIC!

Hey, I hope you've had a wonderful day!

Today Emma and I discussed our ideas for the music used in our movie! We had vastly different ideas as I wanted to go more toward the dark, suspenseful classical music while she looked more into murder ballads. In our initial discussions, we agreed that we should use royalty-free music to spend more time focusing on the movie itself rather than spending extra time emailing the artists. Doing this also makes it easier on both of us during the editing process. I also wanted to use royalty-free music because it is easier to change music choices during the editing process. If we choose a song now, before filming, and contact the artists and gain the rights to that song, during the editing process the song may not fit the mood we are looking for, but it would be too late to change it at that point. Using royalty-free music provides us with the flexibility we need.

During my research, I used the same website I had for the commercial and the music video, Pixabay. Pixabay provided an easy way to find and download royalty-free music, free of cost. The website was also very easy to navigate, providing filters for both the mood and type of music you are looking for.

For this project, I wanted to use classical music as I believe this will achieve that feeling of suspense. Classical music is typically used in horror and thriller movies as it is typically regarded as "creepy" and creates an unsettling feeling in the viewer. I used the filters on Pixabay in an attempt to find this and my favorites were: Awaken by OYStudioCinematic Documentary Story (Main) by Daddy s Music, and Vigilance by RomanSenykMusic.

The thing which appealed to me about all of these songs is how well they fit the image I had of them in my head. Al the songs were slow and suspenseful, making the audience feel as though they are on the edge of their seat. This is what I want to achieve at the end of this commercial, I want the audience to wonder what's coming next.

However, Emma was looking at different types of songs than I was. A main difference I noticed was her ideas had words while none of mine did. The songs she chose were older, and they sounded that way, while mine is simply classical music.

We have decided to see what fits best during the editing of the movie. We realized that the only way for us to truly know what will fit best is to test out many different types of music.

Have a great day!
