Editing Blog: The Beginning of the End!
Hey, I hope you having a good day!
On October 10th, 2022, I began the editing process. We decided I would edit the commercial as I have previous editing experience so someone else doesn't have to learn how. First I edited the coloring of each clip, I wanted the beach scenes to be more vibrant than the beginning scenes. This would help emphasize the difference between before the actor (Riley) ate the donut and after. I upped the vibrance and warmth on the beach scenes while lowering them in the scenes before she ate the donut. I then used iMovie to edit the clips together.
We shot multiple extra angles to make sure we would be able to have all the types of angles/shots necessary. I first just choose which angles and shots would look best together and put all the clips into iMovie, removing all the sound from them. I then edited the parts inside the clips to ensure that I would be able to add the Dunkin' ending like they do in other commercials, so it would remain under 30 seconds. I then attempted to screen-record a commercial to cut out the ending. However, after putting it into iMovie I realized the audio seemed distorted, so I tried again with the same results. I then searched on websites for a download of the commercial outro and I was successful. Although it was an outro from years ago, I think it fits better with the commercial itself.
I then began trying to find the music. When walking to my house after filming the beach scenes we discussed using upbeat music that everyone knows and using some kind of classical music during the "boring" scenes. Classical music is often attributed as boring, especially to my generation, so it would make sense to add it to the scenes before Riley ate the donut. While searching for music I remembered this song, "Escape" by Rupert Holmes, with the iconic line "If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain...". I decided this would be the perfect song as it is perfect for the location, and the fact that it is a catchy song that almost everyone recognizes. I cut out the intro as it was too long and wouldn't get to the desired part before the commercial ended. Luckily, the music before the part I wanted was instrumental, so it barely seems like I cut the song. I overlapped the song with the outro because although I had planned to remove it, I realized that the sound effects of the outro matched perfectly with the sound, so instead of removing it like I originally planned, I lowered the volume of it so both the song and the outro could be heard. I had trouble finding a song to match the beginning scenes, however, after much debate, I settled on Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 15. Although it was more upbeat than what I imagined, it fit perfectly with the "boring scenes".
After watching the commercial with the scenes put together I realized the cuts looked too sharp in relation to the concept of the commercial. I ended up adding a fade-to-white transition between the scenes where Riley eats the donut and the beach scene, this blended the scenes more effectively and created a more dreamy feel. In between the close-up in the beach scene in the long shot, I added a fade transition. By adding this transition, it prolonged the cut and made it blend better.
While I still have to edit the volume of the sound along with other things, I sent the rough draft to my groupmates and they agreed that it's on the right track.
